Gap's co-founder and former CEO, Donald Fisher, passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. The 81 year old was survived by his wife and Gap co-founder, Doris.
The couple first opened the now-mega-retailer as a small denim shop in San Francisco back in 1969, naming the store The Gap after the generational gap between baby boomers and their parents. Once a small mom-and-pop operation, the company now has over 3,100 stores in the US, UK, Canada, France, Japan and Ireland.
In 1995, Fisher resigned as Gaps CEO and in 2004, stepped down from his position as chairman of the board, but maintained his role as Chairman Emeritus until his passing.
Sad.
