Brigitte, the leading German women's magazine, declared on Monday that starting in 2010, they will no longer employ professional models in their spreads. Instead, the lady mag will use "real women."
Andreas Lebert, editor-in-chief of the bimonthly magazine said that he is tired of "protruding bones," in pictures with professional models, who he considers underweight. Instead, he says "we will show women who have an identity, the 18-year-old student, the head of the board, the musician, the football player."
Proudly announcing on its website that "A new epoch has begun," Brigitte will accept photographs of women through the site to be considered for placement in the magazine. Lebert notes that this is not a financial move, in that the mag "will pay the same fee as we would for professional models."
He also notes that the move, "should not be understood as a declaration of war on the modeling profession," and that despite the new direction, the mag is "not going to become a magazine for plus-sizes."
This is not unlike Glamour, which recently pledged to feature more "normal looking" women in their pages.
This is such a refreshing move in the right direction. We hope that the magazine enjoys success in its new direction and that they end up setting a trend in the lady mag industry!
