Lord & Taylor Cracks Down On Fur Practices

After a year-long lawsuit brought on by The Humane Society, Lord & Taylor has agreed to ban raccoon dog fur from its stores and has voluntarily offered to crack down on improper labeling of furs within its stores.

The Humane Society filed suit against L&T and other retailers, including Macy's, Saks, and Neiman Marcus, back in November 2008 for false advertising and mislabling of fur garments.

Apparently, Lord & Taylor sold garments labeled as "faux fur," when in actuality they were raccoon dog fur. Raccoon dog fur is apparently the most commonly mislabeled fur, often called "faux," or raccoon, coyote, or rabbit. The raccoon dog is often skinned alive for its pelt.

Jonathan Lovvorn, VP and chief counsel for animal protection litigation for the Humane Society, said "Lord & Taylor has taken a major step forward by ending the sale of raccoon dog fur and by voluntarily strengthening its labeling standards for all fur products."

Good for them!

Litigation is pending for the other retailers, but is expected to go to trial next year.

Let's hope they're as cooperative as L&T!
