Brazil Cracks Down On Skinny Models

The folks in charge of Sao Paulo Fashion Week have developed some serious concerns about the dwindling weight of their models.

Paulo Borges, creative director of the Brazilian fashion parade, says:

"We have noticed with concern that some models on our catwalks - often the most booked - are extremely thin. These Brazilian girls are based most of the year in Europe and in the USA where they work majorly. This situation cannot be ignored."

Apparently a large number of models showed up to walk looking emaciated, with protruding bones and waif-like physiques. Borges went on to say that he and the other event organizers were dedicated to "preventing extreme health problems among these professionals."

Over the past few years, Sao Paulo Fashion Week organizers have implemented minimum age restrictions and health report requirements in order for models to walk in the shows, in an attempt to create a "positive message," about the model profession.

Borges went on to say, "We would like to propose a joint effort towards minimizing this issue and preventing the effects of this trend on models, on our industry and on society itself."

Good for them!

It takes a big person to actually address the issue head-on rather than sweep it under the carpet, as so many power players in the fashion industry do.

A step in a very good direction!
