Japanese discount chain Don Quijote Co came under attack after a Los Angeles based Jewish rights organization discovered they were selling Nazi party costumes.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center fired off an angry letter asking the company to remove the so called "party" costumes after members spotted them on sale in Japan.
The letter read:
"Nazi Germany carried out a genocidal campaign against the Jewish people during World War II. Six million innocent Jews and millions of other innocents were murdered by the Nazis, including 1.5 million children. In December 2010 Nazism is not dead and the swastika is still deployed as a symbol of hatred against all “non-Aryans” including Asians."
Aico, the company that makes the $60 black jacket and swastika armband, claims they’ve been selling the uniforms for 7 years and have never received a complaint.
A rep from the company told the press:
"This was meant purely as a joke, as something that would easily be recognizable. If we have complaints will certainly stop sales."
Wow.
Regardless of what Aico thinks, Don Quijote confirmed on Monday they will stop selling the costumes.
