This is disappointing.

Due to Hurricane Irene hitting the east coast, the organizers behind the Washington DC Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial have called off the special gala on Saturday evening and the Sunday dedication ceremony, co-chaired by the Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation.

The event was expected to attract almost 250,000 and was going to be attended by celebrities and politicians like President Barack Obama.

Sunday marks the 48th anniversary of the March in Washington and MLK’s I Have A Dream speech.

A rep for the organization revealed:

“In consultation with the National Park Service, the mayor’s office and FEMA, it is with a heavy heart and enormous disappointment that we announce that, in the interest of public safety, we are forced to change our plans.”

As for The Hilfiger Foundation, they've been a key sponsor of the project for over a decade, even donating over $6.25 million and helping raise an extra $2 mil for the memorial.

Hilfiger was also going to donate to the audience over 100,000 custom baseball caps which feature artwork inspired by the memorial and were going to dress about 1,500 volunteers in custom made polos displaying the Memorial logo.

The ceremony will be moved to a later date in September or October.
