The voters have spoken and crowned American Apparel's first plus-size model! Unfortunately, the winner was stripped of her title almost immediately!
Here's why:
A writer at the Daily Beast decided to have fun with the model search by submitting ridiculous pictures of herself as a joke. Nancy Upton ended up winning, but AA decided they won't be awarding her the grand price.
American Apparel's creative directive Iris Alonso wrote in a long-winded open letter:
"Oh — and regarding winning the contest, while you were clearly the popular choice, we have decided to award the prizes to other contestants that we feel truly exemplify the idea of beauty inside and out, and whom we will be proud to have representing our company."
Ouch.
