New Software Helps Determine If Images Have Been Photoshoped

If you’ve ever wondered if your favorite celeb had some help from Photoshop experts, you’ll soon be able to find out.

Researchers at the Department of Science at Dartmouth College have developed software which can help determine if photos have been edited or not. One of the professors behind the project, Dr. Hany Farid, reveals:

“If the tool is used in the future, magazines and advertisements could have a warning label on images similar to a nicotine ad. There could be a number at the bottom of the photo revealing just how much it’s been altered.”

The goal, they claim, is to help bring the truth to advertising and get rid of the false perception of “natural beauty” which is portrayed by altered photos.

The study, published in the National Academy of Sciences journal, states:

“The ubiquity of these unrealistic and highly idealized images has been linked to eating disorders and body image dissatisfaction in men, women, and children. In response, several countries have considered legislating the labeling of retouched photos. If legislation to label altered photos is passed then it will be important to have the right technology to determine the extent by which a photo has been altered.”

Wonder if the US will ever publish that type of disclosure on edited photos. Wouldn’t U want to know how much a photo was edited???
